Been mulling over building my first AR-15 for a while now. Finally started diving into parts and everything. There seem to be decent deals out there, but honestly, I'm still trying to wrap my head around what's actually worth it and what's just flashy marketing.

I'm thinking about going with a basic setup, probably sticking to 5.56 since it feels like a good entry point. But if anyone has thoughts on whether I should consider something else, I'm all ears.

Are there any brands you guys think I should steer clear of? I've heard a few horror stories about certain parts. Also, what are some hidden costs that sneaked up on you? I've seen everything from barrels to handguards and it gets overwhelming.

I've even thought about just buying one that's pre-built, but that feels like cheating somehow. I'd love to hear your experiences. Any rookie mistakes to avoid or lessons learned the hard way?

Thanks for any tips!

I bought a cheap (under 400) Radical AR, a closeout BCA heavy barrel and a Timney trigger. Under a grand and a real tack-driver. OH! And a Mueller 5-34 X50 scope.
