Nothing dramatic happened but when my scope failed on day two, my rifle basically became useless. The knife I almost left behind ended up doing all the work from that point on. It reminded me that your backup gear does not feel important until it suddenly becomes your primary.

My backup iron sights actually saved a hunt for me once when my scope got bumped. You know, it’s funny how that little knife in your pocket suddenly becomes crucial when your main plan falls apart. These days, I even carry a Mora when I’m just out checking trail cameras. It weighs practically nothing, but it’s useful for a million things.

My Havalon once saved an elk trip after my pack frame snapped. I ended up quartering everything by hand and that little knife turned into the MVP.
