I'm curious about what 9mm self-defense ammo people swear by. Are hollow points really worth it, and which brands have you found to be the most reliable?
The ones you can afford. Seriously, buy ammo that feed through your gun. I've never bought "self defense" ammo. We carried flat point jacketed ammo. Hollow points have a bad image with a jury.
So do over penetrated FMJs that strike a second person.
Personally, I like the Golden Sabers. They USED to be reasonable. Now, I use zero bullets JHPs in the ammo I reload. They are used in many different commercial ammos, greatly reducing any jury bias about "they used the most deadly thing they could find" type claims by prosecutorial guys. And there's no doubt, JHPs work quicker at stopping the threat.
I carry the same ammo that law enforcement uses which is the Gold Dot HP. I prefer using a bonded bullet that won't fragment. I've tested them and have been pretty impressed with the bonded bullets in both pistol and rifle ammo.
Same ones I carried on duty for so many years; the Gold Dot HP, 124gr. +P. I've seen the results of a number of police-involved shootings and they are quite effective. The HST rounds is also quite good.
