Been checking out small-frame revolvers recently and trying to narrow down my choices. The S&W 442 is on top of my list but I’d really like to hear how it’s performed for others before I decide. How comfortable is it? What’s the recoil like? Is it reliable? Appreciate in advance.

You should go to one of the indoor ranges that rent guns and shoot one. Being a newer model hammer less pistol, the trigger/action really sucks. Not much can be done to rectify it either.

If you’re interested in one, go try one. It may work for you.

I carried a S&W j-frame of one model or another as an on-duty/off-duty BUG for most of my 37 year career. I still often carry one today. One of my current j-frames I carry is a M&P 340, very similar to the 442. They are great little revolvers for concealment. With a little polishing (preferably by a trained gunsmith) and hammer and recoil sping replacements, they are much improved. All of mine have been accurate, completely reliable and comfortable to carry. I stress that you have any improvements done by a competent gunsmith if you're not familiar with these models.
