What shotgun works best for home defense?

I've been considering a shotgun for home defense and could use some insight from those who've been there. I'm stuck between a 12-gauge and a 20-gauge. The 12-gauge definitely packs more punch, but I hear the 20-gauge is easier to handle, especially in tight spaces. What's your take on that?

When it comes to barrel length, do you think shorter is better for home use? Any particular stock options or features I should prioritize?

I'm also on the hunt for reliable models or brands. I want something straightforward that won't fail me.

And how crucial is training? I've shot shotguns casually, but I want to be ready for anything. What kind of practice should I focus on? Thanks for any guidance!

I'm all about shotguns, but not as informed about use for self-defense. I can say that for me, a pretty big guy, depending on the load and type of gun, a 12 gauge is very manageable. However, a defense shotgun is usually shorter lighter and harder to hold onto. There are pitfalls in some shotguns too. They need to be kept clean, to operate properly and a coach gun might have spring loaded ejectors, which if they failed in a firefight could be deadly. The big benefit of a shogun is the devastating damage that it does to an assailant.

The Taurus Judge (410/45 Colt) should work nicely in a house or car.

I don't keep a shotgun for self defense, but if I did it would probably be this Winchester Model 12. I shorted the butt stock 1" and cut the barrel to about 22". I use it in Wild Bunch Action Shooting. Works well maneuvering doors and windows. Holds 6 plus 1 and you can slam fire it.
