Get some case gauges preferably from Wilson tool and gauge they are great. Yes take your barrel out of your pistol and do a plunk test if your ammo plunks into the chamber the case should ideally be just below the hood. What's your measurement on the crimp ?Just finished my first batch of 9mm handloads and I'm feeling pretty good about it. Using Hodgdon Titegroup and I managed to get the OAL just right. Anyone have tips on optimizing the crimp?
Lee factory crimp die! Well worth it. I load some frangible bullets, and the crimp has to be light.Just finished my first batch of 9mm handloads and I'm feeling pretty good about it. Using Hodgdon Titegroup and I managed to get the OAL just right. Anyone have tips on optimizing the crimp?
Get a wilson case gauge and crimp until it fits in the gauge then take your barrel out of your gun, hold barrel with chamber facing up and drop your crimped round into the chamber it should go plunk also make sure the case rim is just below the barrel hood.I just started handloading 9mm too, Hodgdon Titegroup worked well for me, and I spent a lot of time dialing in the OAL...I struggle a bit with crimps though
Thanks! When using the Wilson case gauge, how tight should the crimp be before testing in the barrel?Get a wilson case gauge and crimp until it fits in the gauge then take your barrel out of your gun, hold barrel with chamber facing up and drop your crimped round into the chamber it should go plunk also make sure the case rim is just below the barrel hood.
Keep adjusting the crimp a little at a time until the round fully enters in the gauge and no more then check I can guarantee it will work in your chamber. Make sure you check a few to make sure they "all" will fit. You have to use the Wilson the other gauges won't work trust me Iv'e been thru this many times. Let us know. Thanks!
